Our School Garden

Almost two summers ago, St Pius X GNS Student Council organised a book carnival to raise money for a school garden. A huge effort was put in by students to donate books and create fun carnival stands. An incredible €1723 was raised and we are delighted to announce that our school garden has finally come to fruition!

Ms Dennedy and Mr Dermody’s classes have been busy planting vegetable plug plants such as lettuce and herbs such as oregano, thyme, sage, chives, basil, coriander, and rosemary in our new raised beds. A wildflower garden has also started blooming which will encourage bugs and bees to visit. 2nd Class have been learning all about how plants grow, the types of controls needed, and important life skills. We plan to harvest at the end of June so hopefully there will be some delicious plants and herbs coming to your homes.

We have also created a beautiful sensory garden so that children can enjoy a wide variety of sensory experiences by stimulating the five senses of sight, smell, sound, touch and taste.

We are hopeful that our school garden will instill a lifelong love of growing and that children will learn about healthy eating, sustainability and responsibility along the way.
