A Lesson in Politics

On Wednesday 06 December, Senator Mary Seery Kearney visited the school to meet the 5th and 6th Classes. Mary is an Irish Fine Gael politician who has served as a Senator since June 2020, after being nominated by the Taoiseach. She gave a most inspirational talk to the girls about her life in politics and the girls had the opportunity to ask lots of questions. She talked to the children about how she became interested in politics at such an early age, how she decided upon a career in politics, about her greatest achievements and her biggest challenges.

Mary’s advice to the girls was that you don’t have to be “super smart” to be a politician – you just need to be able to listen to other people’s opinions.

Afterwards, the Student Councils of St. Pius X Boys and Girls schools met with the senator for a very special Questions & Answers session.  The boys and girls had the opportunity to ask many questions during our 45-minute Q&A.  The children also had the opportunity to ask questions on current affairs including the Gardaí, teacher shortages, equality, and the cost-of-living crisis among many others. The girls and boys really enjoyed it and all agreed their opinions about politicians has changed enormously! I think we may very well have some future politicians at St. Pius X!
